The Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Muttalip Ünlüer led local school children, Council members and the public in a ceremony at Hackney Town Hall on Wednesday 27 January to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.Also present was Mayor of Hackney, Jules Pipe, and Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP Diane Abbott who joined participants at the Council Chambers. In his welcome speech, the Speaker asked guests to consider the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by allied forces, the Holocaust and other genocides that have taken place since, particularly in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur. Pupils from Simon Marks Primary School performed songs followed by introductions by Cllr Ian Rathbone on the theme for this year’s commemoration: ‘The Legacy of Hope’, and by The Learning Trust’s Nicola Baboneau on ‘Facing History and Ourselves’. Students from the Petchey Academy and The City Academy made a presentation on Anne Frank and Miep Gies, a helper of Anne Frank, who died earlier this month. There was also a vocal solo from a Cardinal Pole Catholic School pupil and ‘Reflections on Rwanda’ by students from Skinners’ Company’s School for Girls.
